What Happens When You Stop?

A pathway going nowhere

For years, I thought moving forward meant keeping going. If something wasn’t working, I tried harder. If I was tired, I carried on. If I wasn’t sure what to do, I looked outside myself for the answer.

The problem was, I wasn’t always listening to myself. I had become brilliant at constantly ignoring myself, rather than asking whether I actually wanted to go in that direction.

It took a breakdown, and a lot of questions afterwards, to realise just how little attention I had been paying to my own inner guidance. Now I see things differently. Sometimes the answer isn’t another plan, another goal or another attempt to make something work. Sometimes the answer is to stop for a moment and listen.

But stopping can feel uncomfortable. We’re often taught to keep going. Push through. Try harder. Set the next goal. Make a plan. Keep moving. So when you stop, you might even wonder if you’ve lost your direction.

But what if you haven’t?

What if, underneath all the noise, advice, expectations and other people’s opinions, you already have an inner knowing? The problem is, it's hard to hear when your head is shouting instructions at you all day.

Your inner guidance rarely arrives with a PowerPoint presentation and a five-year plan. It often arrives as a quiet feeling that asks, "What are you doing?" A sudden “no”. A desire to do something you can’t quite explain. Or simply the realisation that what used to feel right for you doesn’t anymore.

Learning to trust that takes practice. It means becoming curious about yourself rather than immediately talking yourself out of what you feel. And no, this doesn’t mean throwing your sensible shoes out of the window and making every decision based on a random feeling.

It means learning to listen to yourself before automatically looking outside yourself for the answer.

Sometimes the next step isn’t to push harder. Sometimes it’s to stop, take a breath and ask yourself:

What do I already know, but keep ignoring?

You might be surprised by the answer.
